Passage 1
Successful Language Learners
If we take a close look at successful language learners we may discover a few techniques which make language learning easier for them.
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on books or teachers; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain everything, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions.
Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and ask these people to collect them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn a language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them.

Passage 1
How to Present Business Cards
Business cards are less important in American culture than they are in Asian culture. But knowing the right way to handle business cards is a useful skill wherever you are.
Requesting someone’s business card is a straightforward(直截了当的、坦率的)process. You need only say: “Do you have a business card?” or “May I have your business card?”
When you want to present your own card, you can say, “Here’s my card. Feel free to call me if you have any other questions.” Or, you might say, “Please send the information to this address. I look forward to hearing from you soon.”
It’s not polite to directly refuse a request from someone for your business card. Instead, you can say, “Sorry, but I’m afraid I’m all out at the moment.” or “l forgot to bring them with me.”
When you do receive a card, say “Thank you” and examine it briefly before putting it away.

Passage 1
Manners
Learning the language of a country isn’t enough. If you know the manners of your foreign friends, you will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own.
A visitor to India should remember it is impolite there to use the left hand for passing food at the table. The left hand is for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India a side-to-side movement of the head is to show agreement. In Bulgaria you shake your head to show “yes”—a nod shows “no”.
In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs while sitting and talking to someone, even at an important meeting. But doing this could cause offence to a Thailander. Touching the head of a grown-up is also not done in Thailand.
Knowing about manners is useful when you are traveling, and you also need to know the language used to express the customs.

Reading
Read the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
How man first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that man, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to stand for those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then lies in their association which the things they bring up before our minds. Words became filled with meanings for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them exactly, or they will make our speech silly and impolite.

Passage 1
“Fingers were made before forks” when a person gives up good manners, puts aside knife and fork, and dives into his food, someone is likely to repeat that saying.
The fork was an ancient agricultural tool, but for centuries no one thought of eating with it. Not until the eleventh century, when a young lady from Constantinople(君士坦丁堡) brought her fork to Italy, did the custom reach Europe.
By the fifteenth century the use of the fork was widespread in Italy. The English explanation was that Italians were averse(反对的)to eating food touched with fingers, “Seeing all men’s fingers are not alike clean.” English travelers kept their friends in stitches while describing this ridiculous Italian custom.
Anyone who used a fork to eat with was laughed at in England for the next hundred years. Men who used forks were thought to be sissies, and women who used them were called show-offs and overnice. Not until the late 1600’s did using a fork become common custom.

Reading
Read the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
Passage 1
In ancient times wealth was measured and exchanged(交换) in things that could be touched: food, tools, and precious metals and stones. Then the barter(易货) system was replaced by coins, which still had real value since they were pieces of rare metal. Coins were followed by flat money (纸币),paper notes that have value only because everyone agrees to accept them.
Today electronic monetary(货币的) systems are gradually being introduced that will transform money into even less tangible forms, reducing it to a series of “bits and bytes”, or units of computerized information, going between machines at the speed of light. Already, electronic fund transfer allows money to be instantly sent and received by different banks, companies, and countries through computers and telecommunications devices.

Reading
Read the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
Passage 1
Researchers have found that REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is important to human beings. This type of sleep generally occurs four or five times during one night of sleep lasting five minutes to forty minutes for each occurrence(发生). The deeper a person’s sleep becomes, the longer the periods of rapid eye movement.
There are physical changes in the body to show that a person has changed from NREM (non-rapid eye movement) to REM sleep. Breathing becomes faster, the heart rate increases, and, as the name implies, the eyes begin to move quickly.
Accompanying(伴随)these physical changes in the body is a very important characteristic of REM sleep. It is during REM sleep that a person dreams.

Reading Read the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
Passage 1:
How to eat healthy can be especially complex for working women who often have neither the desire nor the time to cook for themselves. Registered dietitian(营养师)Barbara Morrissey suggests that a few simple rules can help.
“Go for nutrient-dense(营养物密集的)food,” she suggests, “foods that contain a multiple of nutrients. For example, select whole wheat bread as a breakfast food, rather than coffee cake. Or drink orange juice – the rest is largely colored sugar water. You just can’t compare the value of these foods, the nutrient-dense ones are so superior,” she emphasizes.
Morrissey believes that if a person keeps his or her diet to a small variety of only one or two foods that are not only virtually impossible to sustain, it can be very harmful, because nutrients aren’t supplied in sufficient amounts or balance.
According to Morrissey, trying to find a diet that will cure your illnesses, or make you a superwoman, is a fruitless search. As women, many of us are too concerned with staying thin, she says, and we believe that vitamins are some kind of magic cure to replace food.
“We need carbohydrates, protein and fat— they are like the wood in the fireplace. The vitamins and minerals are the match, the spark, for the fuel,” she explains. “We need them all, but in very different proportions. And if the fuel isn’t there, the spark is useless.”
25.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that working women ____.
think cooking is especially complicated
do not share the same views with registered dietitians
are busy and not interested in cooking
are likely to eat healthily
26.Orange juice is different from orange drink in that ____.
it is natural, nutritious and prepared from real oranges
it contains only a small percentage of real juice
it is largely orange-colored sugar water
it contains nothing but calories(热量)
27.In paragraph 4, “a fruitless search” means ____.
an effort with no results
a search for a diet without fruits
research on fruitless diets
a diet used as medicine
28.According to the passage, many women assume that ____.
vitamins are some kind of substitution for food
a balanced diet can result in being fat
staying thin and healthy are both possible
lack of variety in diets leads to staying thin
29.By “if the fuel isn’t there, the spark is useless”, the author attempts to mean “____”
Without carbohydrates, protein and fat, vitamins and minerals are of no use.
Carbohydrates, protein and fat are enough to sustain a human life
Vitamins and minerals are virtually of no value
Carbohydrates, protein and fat are as important as vitamins and minerals

Reading
Read the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
Passage 1:
Laziness is a sin, and everyone knows that. We probably all had lectures pointing out that laziness is immoral(不道德的), that it is wasteful, and that lazy people will never amount to anything in life. But laziness can be more harmful than that, and it is often caused by more complex reasons than simple wish to avoid work. Some people who appear to be lazy are suffering from much more serious problems. They may be so distrustful (不信任) of their fellow workers that they are unable to join in any group task for fear of ridicule(讥笑)or fear of having their ideas stolen. These people who seem lazy may be paralyzed (使麻痹,使瘫痪) by a fear of failure that prevents fruitful work. Or other sorts of fantasies may prevent work; some people are so busy planning, sometimes planning great deals or fantastic achievements, that they are unable to deal with whatever “lesser” work is on hand. Still other people are not avoiding work; strictly speaking, they are merely procrastinating (拖延) — rescheduling their day.
Laziness can actually be helpful. Like procrastinators (拖延者), some people may look lazy when they are really thinking, planning, contemplating (沉思), and researching. We should all remember that some great scientific discoveries occurred by chance or while someone was “goofing off” (睡着). Newton wasn’t working in the orchard when the apple hit him and he devised the theory of gravity (重力理论). All of us would like to have someone “lazy” build the car or stove we buy, particularly if that “laziness” was caused by the worker’s taking time to check each step of his work and to do his job right. And sometimes, being “lazy”— that is, taking time off for a rest— is good for the overworked student or executive (主管). Taking a rest can be particularly helpful to the athlete who is trying too hard or the doctor who’s simply working himself overtime too many evenings at the clinic. So be careful when you’re tempted to call someone lazy. That person may be thinking, resting, or planning his or her next book.
31.The main purpose of the article is to tell us that ____.
it is not proper to think that lazy people are all trying to avoid work
laziness is moral sin to be guarded against
laziness is the sign of deep-seated emotional problems
lazy people do more careful work
32.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
Some people appear lazy because they are insecure.
Laziness is a disease caused by complex reasons.
Laziness is more beneficial than harmful.
Newton discovered the theory of gravity by pure accident.
33.It can be inferred from the passage that ____.
the word laziness is sometimes applied incorrectly

lazy people seem more likely to take some time off for a rest

Reading
Read the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
34.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that working women ____.

35.Orange juice is different from orange drink in that ____.
it is natural, nutritious and prepared from real oranges
it contains only a small percentage of real juice

36.In paragraph 4, “a fruitless search” means ____.
an effort with no results
a search for a diet without fruits
research on fruitless diets
a diet used as medicine
37.According to the passage, many women assume that ____.
vitamins are some kind of substitution for food
a balanced diet can result in being fat
staying thin and healthy are both possible
lack of variety in diets leads to staying thin
38.By “if the fuel isn’t there, the spark is useless”, the author attempts to mean “____”
Without carbohydrates, protein and fat, vitamins and minerals are of no use.
Carbohydrates, protein and fat are enough to sustain a human life
Vitamins and minerals are virtually of no value
Carbohydrates, protein and fat are as important as vitamins and minerals

IV. Reading Comprehension
Passage 1.
I arrived at the railway station earlier than I had expected. As my train was not leaving for another hour, I had plenty of time to spare. After buying some magazines to read on the journey, I went to collect my suitcase I had left there three days before. There were only a few people waiting, and I took out my wallet to find the check for my case. The check did not seem to be where I had left it. I emptied everything from the wallet – railway-tickets, money, cards and photographs, but no matter how hard I searched, the check was nowhere to be found.
When my turn came, I explained the situation sorrowfully to the assistant. The man stared at me as if to say that he had heard this type of story many times and asked me to describe the case. I told him that it was an old, brown-looking object no different from the many cases I could see behind the counter. The assistant then gave me a piece of paper and told me to make a list of the things in the case. If they were correct, he said I could take the case away. I tried to remember all the things I had hurriedly put in the case and wrote them down as they came to me.
After I had done this, I went to look among hundreds of cases for mine. For one dreadful (可怕的) moment, I felt worried that if someone had picked the check up, he could have easily taken the case already. Fortunately, this had not happened, for, after a time, I found my case lying on its side high up in a corner. After examining the things inside, the assistant was soon satisfied that it was mine and told me I could take it away. Again I took out my wallet – this time to pay. I pulled out a ten-dollar note and the “lost” check slipped out with it. I could not help blushing (脸红) and looked up at the assistant. He was nodding his head knowingly, as if to say that he had often seen this happen before, too!

Passage 2.
George had stolen some money, but the police had caught him and he had been put in prison. Now his trial was about to begin, and he felt sure that he would be found guilty and sent to prison for a long time.
Then he discovered that an old friend of his was one of the members of the jury at his trial. Of course, he did not tell anybody, but he managed to see his friend secretly one day. He said to him, “Jim, I know that the jury will find me guilty of having stolen the money. I cannot hope to be found not guilty of taking it – that would be too much to expect. But I should be grateful to you for the rest of my life if you could persuade the other members of the jury to add a strong recommendation for mercy to their statement that they consider me guilty.”
“Well, George,” answered Jim. “I shall certainly try to do anything. The other eleven people on the jury look terribly strong minded to me.”
George said that he would quite understand if Jim was not able to do anything for him, and thanked him warmly for agreeing to help.
The trial went on, and at last the time came for the jury to decide whether George was guilty or not. It took them five hours, but in the end they found George guilty, with a strong recommendation for mercy.
Of course, George was very pleased, but he didn’t have a chance to see Jim for some time after the trail. At last, however, Jim visited him in prison, and George thanked him warmly and asked him how he had managed to persuade the other members of the jury to recommend mercy.

Passage 1.
All the housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition: to be the lucky customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This may be your lucky day!”
For several weeks Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hope. The cupboards in her kitchen were full of things which she did not need. In vain her husband tried to dissuade(劝阻)her. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would come to her and say: “Madam, this is your lucky day. Everything in your basket is free.”
One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash desk. As she did so, she saw the manager of the supermarket come to her. “Madam,” he said, holding out his hand, “I want to congratulate you! You are our lucky customer and everything you have in your basket is free.”
